Somaliland Imposes State of Emergency in Three Districts

President Muse Bihi has declared a “state of emergency” in three districts in Sanag region where inter-clan clashes is rife.

Hargeisa, (Somaliland Monitor) -Somaliland’s president on Tuesday announced a state of emergency in three districts in Sanaag region, presidential spokesman said.

President Muse Bihi Abdi issued a decree to install the state of emergency in Erigavo, El Afweyn and Gar Adag districts in Sanaag Region for three months due to rising bloody inter-clan clashes in the region.

The state of emergency order follows an ambush targeting security forces near Gar Adag district in Sanaag region on yesterday (April 29) that left two police officers dead.

The two slain officers, the head of the Garadag Police station and the deputy commander of the Garadag Police station were leaving the town after demonstrations pertaining to the death of prisoner who died whilst in detention at Erigavo prison. The assailants are still at large.

Inter-clan clashes in Sanag region has become an increasingly severe security threat in Somaliland since 2017.

According to the constitution, parliament needs to approve the president’s decree to come into force.
